To combat youth unemployment in South Africa's North West Province, Bakgatla Ba Kgafela, led by Kgosi Nyalala Pilane, has partnered with various Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) to open a new career center. The launch event took place on May 14, 2024, at Mphebatho Museum and was attended by community leaders, government officials, and Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande.
Minister Nzimande emphasized the importance of addressing youth unemployment, noting that over 3.3 million young South Africans are not in employment, education, or training. He warned of the social consequences if this issue remains unresolved.
The career center, funded with over R22.9 million, aims to support over 10,000 young people and adults in skill development through learnerships, IT training, entrepreneurship, and support for Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). Participating SETAs include INSETA, CETA, AgriSETA, W&RSETA, and the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing SETA.
Minister Nzimande thanked Kgosi Pilane for his significant investment in the youth, highlighting the collaboration as a hopeful step towards reducing youth unemployment and promoting continuous learning.
